Planning a Border
The border on a quilt is just as important as the rest of the design. In fact what is chosen as a border sets off the rest of the quilt. There are no magic formulas as to how wide, how dark or what design should go into the border. Each quilt is different and requires separate scrutiny. When I finish a quilt top, I pin it on the wall, or lay it on the floor and drag out all the possible fabrics and borders that I think might look good. One very important factor is that whatever is chosen for the border needs some separation from the main part of the quilt. You do not want the border to "crowd" the quilt. This month's quilt, "Palette Charm" is a good lesson. I made the quilt and put a 5" border print strip around the edge. When it was finished, I realized that the border seemed to be crowding the quilt and that there also needed to be more dark fabric in the border. I made the change, putting a 2" strip of border print, a 1" strip of the dark fabric and then finished it off with a final 4 ¼" strip of border print. While the first border was much easier to do, it did not do justice to the quilt design. Both versions of the quilt are shown here. Which one do you like the best? |
